The serum growth hormone response to exercise has been evaluated in 98 children with short stature. In 65 children growth hormone deficiency was excluded by a single postexercise level of more than 20 mIU/ml. The test is simple and can be carried out as part of an outpatient consultation. It is recommended as an initial screening test for growth hormone deficiency in short children.
